A Pattern Language for AI

Almost 50 years ago, A Pattern Language provided a model of hoow to organize the different parts of architecture and construction. It was so successful that pattern languages have been built for composing music, economic development, and more.

Carlos Lopez has now produced A Pattern Language for Generative AI: A Self-Generating GPT-4 Blueprint.

Besides presenting imaginative prompting guidance, Lopez incorporates semiotics, scenarios, and storytelling. Looks very interesting.

He says,

I’ve also decided that the only way to do this book justice is to have it implemented in software. It’s too non-linear to be captured in a book. Hence, owners of the book will receive an early access peek at this new software. This may become the first book in the world that is self-generating!

It’s a guide offering a ccollection of design patterns to enhance user interaction with GPT-4, aimed at users of all levels. Inspired by Christopher Alexander’s architectural design patterns, this book adapts the concept to AI and natural language processing.

The author details techniques for:

  • Extracting explicit and implicit information by refining prompts.
  • Using analogy-based explanations, reframing, and perspective-shifting.
  • Exploring hypothetical scenarios, ethical dilemmas, and counterfactual thinking.
  • Improving brainstorming, lateral thinking, and problem restatement.
  • Leveraging cross-disciplinary insights, comparative analysis, and role-playing.
  • Employing storytelling, narrative techniques, and creative constraints.
Each pattern includes explanations, examples, and real-world applications.

The author demonstrates using GPT-4 to understand challenging questions, such as:

  • The necessity of sensory grounding for general intelligence.
  • C.S. Peirce’s continuum of signs in semiotics.
  • The relation of evolutionary thinking to Alexander’s Nature of Order and other cognitive theories.
  • Mapping concepts beyond human comprehension.

A unique aspect is the author’s decision to implement the book’s content in software, as its non-linear nature is difficult to capture in a traditional book format. Owners of the book will receive early access to this software, with the aspiration that it might become “the first book in the world that is self-generating.”
